calendar glitch

Ok - something happened between yesterday and today and all of next week's afternoon visits to mike disappeared from the calendar. I tried to put them all back in as best as I could remember... but please check to confirm that you're in the right time slot. x0x0 danna Off to the hospital right now. Mike's nurse is not Vince today. Thank gosh.

I checked in at about 9:30 AM and found him asleep but with a tray of mm-mm-good brekky over to the side. Eggs and sausage and apple juice. So I said "hi, it's Pete," and he immediately opened his eyes, gave me a "hey, Petey" -- he was really bright eyed and alert, though shivering a bit -- and after some chit chat (he said he wasn't cold) I asked if he was hungry for breakfast. I was happy he said yes. And boy, was he hungry. Eggs and apple juice. Big bites. He said he preferred spoon to fork, and we joked about "my" cooking.

Then in came two nurses, who annouced he was NPO. (Nothing by mouth.) It took me about half a second to become enraged. "Why is this breakfast here?" I demanded. "Why is there no NPO written anywhere?" (Usually there is something written in the room somewhere so well intentioned idiots like myself don't accidentally feed a patient with the food the hospital negligently left in the room in the first place.)

The nurse, not Vince, immediately apologized and said they -- including Drs. Andrews and Evans -- couldn't figure out why NPO was ordered last night (it was apparently in the chart), and they see no reason for NPO themselves.

Very unimpressive.

Mike witnessed this exchange and I told Danna about it by phone immediately. It was heated, I assure you. It might have left something of an impression on Mike. Someone should see if he recalls it.

Anyway, he seemed a bit sharper to me than yesterday and the day before. Eyes were closed alot.

Danna,

We all fully understand the concept that it doesn't help you or Mike to give you MORE things to do. With this in mind, would you like me to follow-up on the Nurse Vince issue. I could speak with the head nurse on your behalf. When appropriate, I can be very diplomatic (contrary to popular opinion). Or, if you would like me to get someone else to do this, I could facilitate that, too.

It's time to delegate assignments, especially as you become more and more overwhelmed.

given mike's change in condition yesterday (fever, sodium level), is it possible that they move him to the other side of the floor where care is stepped up??? at least that way, they'd be more attentive to his needs and condition??? not that you want to move him again... but this lack of care is alarming... and potentially dangerous, as I am sure you already feel. would this make sense? i hate to make suggestions that you likely already considered... i'm just wondering out loud.

I agree with CSM that this nurse situation sounds potentially dangerous. Even that whole thing about mistaking his friend for his son could have really confused Mike in his already-confused state.

Danna just called me at 4:30 PM today, Friday. They have moved Mike to ROOM 6604, window side, and Vince has been banished from Mike's care. Dr. Andrews showed Danna Mike's MRI from last night, and there are 2 very large cysts now, fluid-filled. They are going to aspirate them on Tuesday, that's the plan. He was alert today and sat up in a chair for a few hours.

Peter - if you're out there - I apologize if I know you, but I don't think I do, please tell how it is you're allowed to go in at breakfast time? If you just stop in for a brief visit, do they not mind? Or are you medical personnel so you blend right in or something? Inquiring minds want to know. And I do agree with whoever it was who said you are wonderful, whoever you are. Hugs to you and all of mike and danna's amazing friends, Anne

It's funny, Anne, I saw the visiting hours posted this AM, but I figured what the hell, I'm there, I want to see him. So I just marched into his room. Same thing tonight -- I was there just at 8 PM, and I just marched right in. It's sort of like "Catch Me If You Can." If you walk with confidence, few are going to question you.

I don't think we've ever met, but I understand from Mike we have something in common (twins!)
